How does the Express Entry healthcare category work?
Checked against official sources, October 2026
In category-based rounds, IRCC invites Express Entry candidates who meet a specific category. To be eligible for the healthcare and social services occupations category, you need at least 12 months of full-time work experience, or the part-time equivalent, within the past 3 years in a single eligible occupation, in Canada or abroad, plus the round’s other requirements.
Who this is for
Nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and social care workers considering Canadian permanent residence.
What the official guidance says
- You must first meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry, including being eligible for one of its 3 programs: Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program.
- For the healthcare and social services category you need at least 12 months of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time) within the past 3 years, in a single listed occupation, in Canada or abroad. It does not need to be continuous.
- Eligible occupations include registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, general practitioners and family physicians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, medical laboratory technologists, medical radiation technologists, medical sonographers, paramedical occupations, dentists, dietitians, psychologists and social workers, among others.
- In a category-based round, IRCC ranks candidates who meet the category and invites the top-ranking ones to apply for permanent residence.
- IRCC announces categories in advance, and may not need a category round if enough eligible candidates are invited through general rounds.
What it does not mean
- Being in the category does not guarantee an invitation; you are still ranked against other eligible candidates.
- Express Entry is immigration, not professional licensing. You still need to register with the regulator in your province or territory to practise.
- Work experience must be in one listed occupation, not added up across several.
What to do next
- 01Check you are eligible for at least one Express Entry program.
- 02Confirm your occupation’s NOC code is on the healthcare and social services list.
- 03Take an approved language test and get the other documents ready.
- 04Create your Express Entry profile, and start licensing with your provincial or territorial regulator in parallel.
